The Oscars

With the Oscars approaching, I am recalling the glamour and festivity found among friends during last year's award season. Being the movie lover that I am, I needed no further excuse to organize a get together that entailed customized invitations (with the help of Phil Alig), gowns, signature drinks, and awards of our own. Everyone got to hold the statuette, as we're all winners, you know? While I envisioned myself attending as Louise Brooks and even attempted this alter-ego, all feedback, including my own, confirmed that I'm better as a blonde, and wigs are definitely better left in the bag in which they arrived.

Last year I was rooting for 'The Kids Are All Right" and "Biutiful". This year, it's 'Tree of Life', Nick Nolte in 'Warrior', Jessica Chastain, for ALL her brilliant performances this past year, Viola Davis for 'The Help', and Gary Oldman or Jean Dujardin ('Tinker, Tailor' and 'The Artist'). Would love to see 'Drive' and 'Jane Eyre' pick up in the categories in which they were nominated.

Our invites were mailed out in an antique golden envelope, of course.

Everyone went home with a Christopher Norman Baroque Brownie in an initialed golden box. (far left)

Cousin Wendy drove in from Columbus today so we could take a moment to capture a photograph of her baby with 'Nana'. Wendy has a photograph of herself with Nana that was taken when Wendy was a year old.

Nana is my stepfather's mother. She's 94, lives in her own home, makes a mean pizza, and attends mass everyday. Pictured above, she is holding her newest great-grandchild, Audra Marjorie, to whom has been given her namesake (Marjorie). Bless them both.

I'm so excited that Nikki Bowman, editor at WV Living magazine, gave me the opportunity to conceive of and orchestrate a photography feature for this year's WV Wedding's magazine, which hit stands today! I will be sharing photos and blogging about the crazy but thrilling experience of producing and shooting "Maid to Order", one-of-a-kind bridesmaid looks. So lucky to work with Krystal, whose family we've known for 60+ years. My grandmother had her father in kindergarten. Also lucky to work with Michael, cause he looks like Jeremy Renner.

Here's their engagement session from the fall. I visited them in Columbus, where they currently live, though Michael's hometown of Pittsburgh is displayed proudly in the background of the beginning photos. The schnauzer? Cutest dog ever. Totally stole their show.

Before heading to the park to pop some bubbly, (Michael proposed to Krystal in this park in German Village), we visited a local wine shop, a little dream of theirs to own someday. Here's to that dream being a reality and to the two of you having an amazing wedding and even better - an amazing life together.

I photographed Russ and Kara's wedding what feels like eons ago. As their family grows, they call me back for visits to capture them. This December, I spent time with them, meeting their newest little one, Josh.

As I look through these photos, I am reminded of why what I do brings fulfillment to my life and hopefully to the lives of others. These family memories are ones worth holding onto. I'm so grateful that Kara loves me, trusts me, and let's me "do my thing". xoxo

The Benedum Foundation Annual Report

This fall I worked with Vicki Crowley at Landesberg Design and provided photography for the Benedum Foundation's annual report.

"The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation has served West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania since it was established in 1944 by Michael and Sarah Benedum. Grants are made to support specific initiatives in the areas of Education, Economic Development, Heath and Human Services, Community Development, and Civic Engagement."

Working with Vicki was a dream. She's about my age, has roots in New England (where I lived and went to school for 10 years), and is a working mother. She is a contemporary and a creative cohort.

My assignment was to bring a visual complement to the pages of the report. I had the opportunity to visit Shinnston, Chester, Ansted, and Morgantown, West Virginia, capturing community-identified assets and ambitions.

We had a family wedding this past summer, and I was the photographer (and self-appointed wedding event designer, ahem). My stepbrother and Jen were married during our annual family July shindig at Bethany Beach. Blended families add texture, depth, and richness to life, as reflected in the feel of this wedding. I was proud to help provide design consultation (at my own request). Thinking of the beach, the time of year, and the kids, pinwheels seemed most appropriate. They were lovingly made by Mike's mom and aunt for both ceremony and reception.

I also offered to custom design the invitations using Jen's primary color, a nautical compass

with a great quote, a map of Bethany, and a design nod to the pinwheels that were used in both the ceremony and reception.

Side note: As a family member shooting the wedding, most people engaged with the camera, as they were engaging with me, someone they know. This was a different way of working, but it turned out just fine.

I had the pleasure of photographing Lauren and Matt's wedding three years ago, and this past July, I had the pleasure of photographing Payton, who turned one this summer. Like her parents, she's kind, fun, and bright...unbelievably bright. At the end of spending an afternoon with her, Payton came to me and hugged me for the longest time. I felt so blessed. Capturing these significant times in people's lives and having it returned with love and appreciation is a great way to work through life.

Forgive me for neglecting my viewership the past months. So many people, indeed some who are even strangers, take interest and take the time to follow-up with my little blog of photography, writing, and personal life and insights. Thank you! I intend to be more diligent with my posting. It's not that there isn't work to post, there is PLENTY, for which I'm abundantly grateful. However, I think I had some moments these past months of just needing to pull in and reflect, taking time and space for solitude.

But I am ready to share again. My grandmother passed away just over a week ago. I miss her. My sister had the insight to encourage all of the grandchildren to write something that would be read aloud during the funeral. I was fulfilled by the chance to share my feelings about my grandmother at the funeral. A longtime family friend approached me after the burial requesting that I post a photo of my grandmother and what I had written about her so that she could share it with her elderly mother. I agreed to do that, happily and humbly. I will share it in an upcoming post. However, I would like to also take the moment to share a story of my hopes for a new and better blog and how that might come to be sometime in the future. For now, I will treasure this one, its readership, and the opportunity and responsibility of sharing.

I attended WPPI last February (a photo conference for wedding and portrait photographers). WPPI takes place in Las Vegas. The trip to Las Vegas, a full schedule, and the general spin of the town left me feeling quite exhausted. I had intended to live it up at the coveted photography parties but found myself up for no more than room service and a movie most nights. However, the highlights for me were attending lectures by some of my favorite photographers and connecting with a few of the thousands who had come from around the globe to gather and learn (and party). Waiting in long lines to attend the lectures, led to the opportunity to meet whomever stood closest in line to me. On one occasion and in a long line to see beloved Jose Villa's lecture, I met the nicest French couple. This took me by surprise since my first visit to Paris had me swearing to never return. This couple certainly left a new impression on me. We talked as we meandered through the line and sat together at the lecture. At the beginning of many lectures, business cards were collected from the audience. At the end of the lectures, cards were drawn, and prizes given away. Well, in this particular lecture, Marie and I were both winners. My card was pulled, and I was awarded a pack of 120 film, something that would have come in hand about 10 years ago! Marie's card was pulled, and she won a $750 coupon for a blog design makeover by Finch Design. To my surprise, Marie handed it to me. My dream to have a new blog was realized, at least partially. In the future, I may have a remake by Finch Design. For now, I'll continue to visit you here.

My Grandmother, Hazel "Lucille" Hendershot Woodburn

12/19/14 - 11/2/11

Gramma was one of the most important teachers in my life, a God-given teacher. She led a dignified life. She lived independently, simply and within her means. Her wealth came in the form of intelligence and a sharp mind, physical and emotional strength, perseverance, integrity and confidence. She had an appreciation for beauty and order. She manifested this through a thoughtful and well-organized home. She also crafted practical items in a beautiful way, making blankets, sweaters, and slippers, to name a few. These qualities, values, and talents were her riches, and she shared of them generously.

She learned to be strong from a young age through trials, hardships, and disappointments, and this shaped the person she became until the age of 96. I believe these trials, which she survived with grace and strength, prepared her to live a dignified life until her death.

She was faithful but she was not a blind follower. She wondered and questioned. She was a lifelong learner. She was not boastful about her knowledge and was open about her doubts. She had a quiet wisdom. It deserved great respect.

Her life ended on the highest, sweetest of notes for she had learned the most precious of God’s gifts and was able to let them shine through her. She was content. She was accepting. She was thankful. She could laugh and enjoy. And most importantly, she loved. She loved us in a deep, quiet, strong way. Students of life, these were her greatest teachings.

The slippers she made may unravel, the stitches of a blanket come undone, but her gift of unconditional love transformed her own soul and ours. It is my dearest memory of her. It is her enduring gift to us, the one that lives forever.

(This was my testimony that was read aloud by one of the pastors at Gramma's funeral.)

Laura, La Mariée

I'm so grateful to have had time to photograph Laura in the month prior to her wedding. I'm of the mind that the majority of the wedding day should be spent celebrating, connecting, and being present in the event of marriage, being in relationship to everyone who has come from near and far to witness and to whoop it up. Thus, the bridal session, a relaxed day for portraiture, fun, creativity, and personal meaning.

Laura grew up in Martins Ferry, Ohio. She comes from a lineage of strong French women and from hard-working people. After discussing ideas about where to take photographs, she proposed her grandmother's home. Laura lives in Washington D.C., but she rents her grandmother's home for herself. Laura's grandmother died a year before Laura was born, almost to the date. Laura's mother, "Dee" went into labor in this home (in the room in which Laura is sitting in the window sill).

Laura also wanted to make sure she could have photographs with her Aunt Jackie, the first two photos below. She was not sure whether Aunt Jackie would make it to the wedding, as she has battled Parkinson's for twenty years. "Jackie" was the first name Laura said. Jackie taught Laura all about high heels and nail polish. Jackie was seventeen when Laura's mother Dee was born, and she mothered her like an older sister does. When I took the first photograph below, I felt a confirmation that capturing family moments like these brings me fulfillment and purpose.

Laura's other request was that we capture her in front of her mother's garden. There is a childhood photo of Laura standing in the exact same place with a white towel on her head pretending to be a bride. Indeed, this time she is, and there's no towel, just a Vera Wang gown, mon cheri. Laura is wearing a necklace that her great-grandmother brought from France. All of the flowers used during the shoot - the lavender, the peony, the roses - all came from Dee's garden.

I love Laura. An opportunity to connect with people through photography is a true blessing in my life.

Laura was married Saturday, June 18th at Sandscrest in Wheeling, West Virginia. Wedding photos to come!

Megan + Matt, Engagement Session, NY, NY

A day after a romp through the city on my anniversary, David and I (thanks for lugging my bags, honey), made the rounds with Megan and Matt, visiting some of their favorite spots. Matt is teaching Megan to play chess, so it was fun to run across a park near Washington Square for a little challenge.

We visited the restaurant, One if by Land, Two if by Sea, where the two had their engagement dinner. Beautiful historic place, the former home of Aaron Burr. They took me to Central Park, Grand Central Station, Times Square. Megan even brought bubbles - nice surprise for a little girl in Central Park. Finally, we met on a rooftop for a nightcap. They have an ongoing joke regarding the Empire State Building, so this was a great way to include it in our whirlwind tour.

Megan, a physical therapist, and Matt, a computer programmer originally from Cleveland, will be married in Wheeling this September. You guys are great! Can't wait! xo

I have a little story to accompany this image, which was chosen for the spring cover of WV LIVING magazine...

I don't remember the particulars of a photo assignment I had in college, but I somehow ended up making a photograph with beets. One of my peers HATED the photo and let the entire class know. This was a fancy fine art/serious documentary photo program. Didn't I know that?! Luckily, my professor didn't leave me feeling too battered because twenty years later, I took a photograph of beets again. So what a reward to have my beets acknowledged and showcased. Isn't the color yummy? Thanks WV Living for selecting my beet photograph!

Heidi, Profiles in Wheeling

This was featured in the spring edition of In Wheeling magazine as part of their Profiles in Wheeling. I conducted the interview and did the photography. Jeremy Larance was the contributing writer. Thank you to Heidi and her family for sharing so generously.

Married just three days before the world-changing events of 9/11, Heidi Carr knew almost immediately that her own world would never be as peaceful or predictable as she once imagined it would be. Upon learning that terrorists had used the same ferry that she and her new husband, Chris, planned to take to Nova Scotia on their honeymoon, she knew that more than her travel plans would soon be disrupted. She had, after all, “married one of those men who felt he had to do his part”: Chris quickly joined the Army Reserves.

For the past five years, Heidi has played her own peace-keeping role at home, which – for the time being – is in Wheeling. Here, Heidi, Chris and their two daughters, Emma and Abby, take advantage of each other’s company, fishing on Schenk Lake at Oglebay Park whenever they can. “It’s a peaceful, quiet time.” As Chris prepares to leave for Afghanistan in March, Heidi focuses on the days that they still have together.

While I do not shoot a lot of seniors, photographing Whitney makes me consider it! This star of The Nutcracker and captain of her high school soccer team is certainly one of a kind. While her dance, athletic ability, and beauty certainly awed me, it was her ease and authenticity, her ability to be present when I engaged her, that moved me the most.

The image above (one of the only ones I could find) provided inspiration for the creation of the costume. I was able to figure out what materials we would need for the costume,

The great thing about working in my hometown, a small one, is that I get to photograph people like Laura, who I once held as a baby. Our families have known each other over 65 years.

Now I'm photographing her babies.

I love the Grosso Family. First Amanda. Then Tony. Now Kaitlyn. Can you get a more beautiful bunch? How honored I am that they keep entrusting me? How fortunate I am to have been able to photograph Kaitlyn and her fiance Rob in their current place of residence -West Palm Beach, Florida.

Rob and Kaitlyn met in college, adopted a dog, parted ways, then met again post-college in Philadelphia. Now with budding careers in West Palm, they've settled temporarily. Morgan, their dog, has been sentenced to a life of basking in the sun and eating ice cream. Florida is for the dogs.

I would like to mention that Rob willingly missed Sunday Football and did not grumble, pout, or complain (at least not within ear's reach) during the engagement session. How nice when couples put their heart and soul into a shoot.

I had an opportunity to photograph local artist Bob Villamagna for the fall issue of WV Living, which hit stands last week. I met Bob the year I moved back to West Virginia at our local Crosscurrents art show. Bob won first place in the show, and I won second place and honorable mention. It's very exciting for me to put my name in a sentence with Bob's, especially since the context is art and awards.

I've been following Bob's work since I met him at the opening of Crosscurrents five years ago. Each year he continues to take home the top prizes for his collages. Bob uses colorful and carefully collected tin, a substance quite malleable under his sharp intellect, keen eye, and great sense of humor.

When I grow up, I'm going to buy one of Bob's pieces for my house. I've always dreamed of having an art collection, and I need more things in my life that give me an excuse to giggle and chuckle.

Matthew Karnoupakis and Jennifer Stolirchick were married on July 10, 2010 at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton, West Virginia. Father Frank Milanese presided over the service in Matt's family church. While the couple calls Morgantown home, it was important for them to return to the Ohio Valley (Jenn is from Wheeling) for their wedding.

The Greek service is ancient and filled with symbolic and mystical rituals emphasizing love, mutual respect, equality, and sacrifice. The service began with Matt and Jenn holding wedding lambathes, tall lighted candles, which represent their willingness to receive Christ. Matt's brother Mark served as his Koumbaro or religious sponsor. He participated in the exchange of rings, the crowning of the couple, and the ceremonial walk. At the end of the ceremony and in the midst of the blessedness, Father Frank petitioned for another wedding, this time for Mark, bringing a hearty laugh from the congregation of witnesses.

Jenn and Matt's reception was held at the only location in Weirton that could accommodate over 450 people - The Serbian Cultural Center. Matt and Jenn worked with Simone of 5 Senses Event Design in Pittsburgh. Jenn, who is fashion-forward, chose bright green as her accent color. Simone wove this color throughout the day in lovely ways using peacock feathers, linens, and gourmet lollipops. Shortly after the start of the reception, children had devoured their favors. By the end of the reception, adults had plucked feathers from the centerpieces to don behind their ears. Ouzo was certainly to blame for the fun.

What stood out to me at this particular wedding was the closeness of multigenerational families. Grandmothers held babies, grandfathers hugged and doted on grandchildren, aunts and uncles danced with their nieces and nephews. Cousins twirled on the dance floor, their infectious and innocent spirits a call for everyone to celebrate. Jenn and Matt were surrounded by this love.

Jenn and Matt honeymooned in St. Lucia and then returned to Morgantown to continue their busy professional lives as a pharmacist and dentist, respectively. Many blessings for a happy, healthy, and heartfelt marriage!

Lovely Day

Amee Reyes and Steve Patterson were married over the 4th of July holiday in Wheeling, West Virginia. The two met at a bar on the water in Washington DC, where Steve works on Capitol Hill and Amee as a project manager for a law firm. If the 4th of July weekend seemed a little less bright in Washington this year, that's because there was an exodus of its residents, who traveled to Wheeling, West Virginia to celebrate the couple.

Amee wore a white Vera Wang lace-covered gown, a cathedral-length veil and silver and gold Jim Choo heels. Her borrowed was jewelry graciously lent by her mother and her mother's dear friend, Jo Statler. Steve and his groomsmen wore custom-made barongs, a traditional formal embroidered shirt in the Philippines.

Amee and Steve were married at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in downtown Wheeling. The ceremony was officiated by Amee's childhood priest, Father Jim Sobus. Father Jim's homily drew from letters that Amee and Steve had written about their relationship with their families and each other. Walking away down from the podium, he moved among the congregants, and connected with the guests in a personal and heartfelt manner. The wedding ceremony included several Filipino traditions. Fourteen couples served as principal sponsors or witnesses to the marriage. Secondary sponsors helped carryout symbolic rituals of unity, including the veil pinning and binding of the cord.

Amee's mother Elsie, who helps organize many local events, spent months working with close friends Deanna Taylor and Sharon Byrd to create a breathtaking event for hundreds of guests. Brenda Ponzani of Ponzani Florist in St. Clairsville helped transform Glessner Auditorium at Oglebay into an elegant tented room using ivory draping Elsie had purchased in the Philippines. A crystal chandelier was hung in the center of the room to create a focal point above a seven-tiered cake topped with the Spanish Lladro figurine.

A live band from Pittsburgh rocked the night away. The former women's soccer team at Princeton, where Amee was a star athlete, showed the crowd how to tear it up on the dance floor, though this particular crowd required little inspiration. The night included Oglebay's 4th of July fireworks. Guests simply walked onto the side lawn of Glessner to enjoy them.

After moving to a new home in Alexandria, Virginia, Amee and Steve will head to New Zealand's Cook Islands for their honeymoon. Here's to your journey in marriage and life - may you always recognize its bountiful blessings.

Sarah and Hunter met at NC State in a graduate program in accounting. That being said, I never expected to find so much joy, enthusiasm, and hearts wide open in people of numbers. Breaking all unwarranted stereotypes of accountants (half of my family works in this field), these two showed how a great partner lifts you up, brings out your best, and lets you shine in life.

Their ceremony was held in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where Sarah grew up. A reception followed at Glessner, Oglebay Park with everyone's dance skills on display for the evening. After honeymooning in Costa Rica, Sarah and Hunter will return to North Carolina, where they both work for Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Amee and Steve, Washington D.C.

A couple of weekends ago, after a couple of bourbons and beer, Amee and Steve were ready to show me their town. We began at the historic Union Station.

From there, we ventured towards The Capitol.

Arranging to propose to someone at the top of The Capitol is not an easy feat in this day and age. (Working on Capitol Hill doesn't hurt). Nonetheless, arrangements were made, the coconspirators informed, and Amee called out of the blue with a surprise and once in a lifetime tour of The Capitol .

Unfortunately, the tour guide had not been informed of the end game, and taking her duties quite seriously, pointed out every symbol and detail on the ceiling dome. As they wove their way towards the top of the building, Amee, a little grumpy from low blood sugar, and Steve, bearing the anxiety of ring burning through his pocket, politely listened to a tale of art and political history. Right before they exited the door at the top of the dome that would lead them to a view of Washington D.C., Amee thought to herself, "This would be an amazing place for someone to make a marriage proposal." (I would call that a premonition.) She exited the door, took in the view, turned around to speak to Steve, and found him on one knee with a ring in hand.

On our way to The Capitol, an important symbol in their work and personal lives, we stopped by a quaint structure (below), which the Japanese gifted to the U.S. in the early part of the 20th Century. Peeking out from behind is the dome of The Capitol buildling.

After visiting The Capitol, we ventured to The Jefferson Memorial and finally to the bar where Amee and Steve met. The temperature had dropped, the wind swirled at impossible speeds, I had let Amee's blood sugar drop, and we were back to square one, looking for a warming glass of bourbon.

Amee and Steve will be married in Wheeling, West Virginia over the 4th of July holiday, and I'm expecting a large, elegant, and memorable celebration.

First Bike!

Grampa Mike and Gramma Kathy gifted Olivia her first bike this spring, and it's a fancy one - ribbons, hot chili pepper bell, and basket. She rode it four or five times in several locations just on the first day of having it! We've been down to the bike path, the river, and on our street, of course.

Yesterday, her neighbor Hyde challenged her to a race. She hit my car and fell off within the first fifteen yards. Her solution: to dust off and get some cleaning supplies. There's nothing like a sparkling bike. For me, there's nothing like the sparkle of youth in my sweet, beautiful, and fun-loving daughter.

Winter Doings

I'm starting to think that my daughter deserves her own Sartorialist blog. In case you haven't been to the original, click here - The Sartorialist. Even better, buy his book. As a collector of photography books and a lover of fashion and personal style/expression, I highly recommend it! While Olivia's 'gitup' could easily be mistaken for daywear, we were in fact on our way to ballet and tap.

I love when I hear, "Mommy, I want to do art!" Yesterday afternoon, we sat and sketched out Sleeping Beauty together (at her request), trying to think ahead for Valentine's Day. Why does she have to draw a character who lies around, poisoned by another woman, stuck in repose until a man kisses her? Who introduced her to Disney? (Wasn't me). Anyway, saving grace is that Olivia chose to draw her 'AWAKE', and there's no prince in site.

After she sketched, she wanted to paint on top of the drawing. After painting, she declared that her work of art was a gift for me. We'll tackle Valentine's cards another day, I suppose. When daddy came home, and we showed him her work, she explained, "You can't really see Sleeping Beauty. Somebody thought she was a dog, and they put her in a cage." Hearing that got me really worked up! Then I had to contextualize (rationalize) my daughter's remark by remembering that she loves dogs (her grandparents just got a new one specifically for HER to play with), and the dog is crate/cage trained. Nevertheless, I will remind her daily to break free from the beliefs that encage us, and I'll continue the work of living my own life that way.

On our quick December jaunt to NYC to renew passports (options: DC or NYC, easy pick) and photograph a new baby (Calista), we did nothing more than appease Olivia (and eat lots of good food). Our Olivia appeasing included a trip to FAO Schwartz. Next time we'll look for a store with more personalized and handcrafted toys, but FAO certainly was an 'experience' at Christmastime, especially with a gift certificate from the grandparents in hand. Below, Olivia works at the 'Design your own Barbie' module with Daddy. Check out the previous post to see what Olivia picked out with her gift certificate.

After Barbie, it was on to horses. It was amazing to see how concentrated she was painting this horse. Look for her glazed and fired horse in the previous posting.

It's difficult to answer what I love about Jos in Hemingway form, rather than lengthy Updike prose. Of course we work for a lot of the same reasons our parents and great friends work--because we were brought up with strikingly similar values. Obviously, that answer is about as sexy as the cinder blocks in our basement. But, to use a really poor analogy, when I think about it that truly is the foundation of our relationship. Beyond that though, there is a sense of peacefulness and calm in Josie that I really admire. Good, bad or indifferent I have a tendency to let my emotions get the best of me at times and she has this way about her that keeps me from capsizing. She's also got a great style. And, I'm not just talking about her fashion sense (which is stellar). I mean style in the way that she helps people, the way she carries herself--the way she loves. It's totally genuine and utterly complete. She's a throwback.

As for the day, we wanted to keep things pretty simple--with a few accents we love (the gardenias, the beautiful cathedral). One of my good buddies who couldn't make it to the wedding saw the slide-show and said that it looked like we were back in 1958...and that's exactly how we wanted everyone to feel.

This post is about music and creation, but I wanted to include a visual and a photographer mention as well. These images are by Paul Caponigro. When I was thinking about Bon Iver's ethereal sounds, his images came to mind.

"At the root of creativity is an impulse to understand, to make sense of random and often unrelated details. For me, photography provides an intersection of time, space, light, and emotional stance. One needs to be still enough, observant enough, and aware enough to recognize the life of the materials, to be able to 'hear through the eyes'."

As I sat working on the computer earlier this year, I listened to NPR's notable music for 2008. One of their favorite albums was FOR EMMA, FOREVER AGO by Bon Iver (bone ee-vhere), French for 'good winter'.

This album was written and composed by Justin Vernon during a 3 month period of isolation. After a band breakup, a lost relationship (with Emma), and a bout of mono, he elected to spend the winter months in his father's cabin in Wisconsin to recuperate. He hadn't intended to write music but in the solitude, it was music that arose. The entire album is Justin's vocals and instrumentals. The harmonies are otherworldly.

I fell in love with the album when I first heard it. Recently I heard about an a capella version of the song 'For Emma'. If you click on the title link, you can watch Bon Iver perform it.

My Pilgrim

New Moon Madness

Well, it has definitely become a habit. We threw our second party in conjunction with the Twilight Series, this time for New Moon. Last year, our group was small enough to gather around my mom's dining room table. This year, the group had doubled. Not only did the size of the guest list change, the obsession in planning the party was exponential but one of the most enjoyable things ever. I suppose I've tapped into a new passion.

I love the books, but I also love the connection I've made with women through the books. That connection alone is reason enough to celebrate. For all that my friends do as doctors, accountants, editors, business owners, and moms, we deserved a night out, some hours of magic, time that would lift us out of our everyday and transport us to the moon. With the help of friends and really supportive people in the community, we put together one enchanted evening.

Our Twilight Party was such a success last year, and by success I mean that an amazing time was had by all, there was no doubt that a New Moon Party would occur. A couple of months ago, as I began to think about the when and where, design inspiration came for the invitation above. I used vintage images that related to the story (vintage motorcycles, girls in red capes, birthday, wolf, and vampire references). A color palette emerged as well, and I stuck with that throughout the planning of the rest of the party. I loved being able to create a world with particular and confined hues. When I made the custom backdrop for our modern photo booth (last pictures on the post) and began to tear the fabrics into strips, just looking at and mixing the colors was so fulfilling.

I really wanted to incorporate some of my favorite quotes from the book into the evening. I made the poster above, framed it, and hung it with a picture light. The quote seemed relevant to our own lives here, small town and fairy tales. Interesting enough, part of this quote is said by Bella in a voiceover as she arrives to Emily Young's house in the film (just in case you missed that moment).

Above are some details from the party. Toni Wierzbicki of Bellisima used protea in her arrangements. She also used this amazing kangaroo paw, Cambria orchids, hibiscus pods, and turkey feathers from her farm, just to name of few. The middle image above shows the tattoos I made. Guests could choose either the Cullen Crest or the Quileute tattoo (fangs or fur). On the right, handmade stirrers reading, "Sip, Stir, Howl" for our signature drink, "New Moon Shine". It was a mix of Kahlua, Tequila, Cointreau, and orange mango juice. Originally it was supposed to have passionfruit juice, but I couldn't get my hands on any and decided to substitute.

Below are macaroons, which are associated with France but originated with monks in the 16th century in Italy. We placed them under cheese and cake domes, some with moss on the edges to be part of our tablescape. They were passed around during dessert in addition to Bella's birthday cake (an Italian Spiced Creme Cake). We accompanied the sweets with Italian cordials - Sambuca, Frangelico, and Limoncello (the second half of the movie takes place in Italy).

The photo to the right of the macaroons is a close-up of the seating chart. The orange mini-pocket envelopes held each person's movie ticket.

The tisanes of tea from Serendipitea were such a hit last year, that we included them again this year but used new flavors. The tea tray below was also part of the tablescape. Tisanes included Mademoiselle Gray, Pagan Alms, Passion & Envy, and SSSSSSpicey. So delicious. My favorite teas in the world.

Above, the table wasn't completed, but you can get an idea of it.

We rented a trolley for the party. At the beginning of the evening, we met at the cinemas at The Highlands, where we boarded and headed to Oglebay. At the end of the dinner party, the trolley took us back to the theater. Everyone could enjoy the cocktails and not worry about driving. Plus, I selfishly wanted us to all be together. Below, Sarah Lydick from Sandscrest and Susana from England. She's visiting the states for a couple months and lives down the street with one of my neighbors. Strangely enough, she's Team Jacob, even though her countryman plays Edward.

Above, exiting the trolley for Wilson Lodge. It appears Heidi Carr is ready to party. The event was held at Oglebay's Ft. Henry Room, a perfect atmosphere for the rustic woodsy quality of New Moon, in which the wolves and The Quileute Tribe are front and center.

Above, Valerie Milton attempts to answer my tricky trivia questions about the book and movie. Prizes for the games (we played Jeopardy, Telephone, and Trivia) related to Bella's birthday gifts. Yes, someone did win a camera! A Diana camera, a plastic 2 1/4 that takes dreamy, romantic soft-focused surprises - part of the lomography movement. The image to her right is part of the signature drink table. Below, Kerrie Wisvari and Melody Osborne listen as my BFF Jennifer Brooks plays "The Meadow", a piano piece from the soundtrack. We moved into the common room for that entertainment.

Above, the dinner menu, the dining table, which seated all 37 of us. Immediately above, my friend from junior high, Renee George. She stole a turkey feather from the table arrangements to place in her hair. This was probably post-cordial. How many flavors did you try?

At the end of the evening, everyone filled a favor bag with candy and popcorn for the movie. Each bag held the quote, "I love a happy ending. They are so rare." We also had napkins on the candy bar imprinted with the quote, "You're overestimating my self-control."

So, I believe my photography services will branch out to offer a modern photo booth. The New Moon party was our first go at it. We created a custom made backdrop with lost of textures and fabrics. It was lots of fun for the partygoers and a big relief for me, as I don't have to worry about capturing every guest - they do the work for me! It appears in these cases, folks actually enjoyed having their photos taken!

Above, Nikki Bowman of WV Living and yours truly. I think we were trying to show off our tattoos, mine is conspicuously placed on my most prominent feature. However, it looks like she's elbowing me in the face! And I'm loving it! Oh, what a drink or two will do.

These folks are all related, can you tell? Courtney Whitehead, Sandy Binder, and Barb Whitehead. Whatever you're doing looks so wolfy.

I had to intervene in the photo booth experiment and show everyone how to have a good time. Minus the lady in the center, from left to right, Courtney Whitehead, Gina Savatori, Laura Wenger, Kelly Pujia, Amanda Whitehead, Ashley Kutrovac, and Carrie Enrietti. Behind me is lovely Caroline Palmer, who cannot be seen due to my overly enthusiastic presence in front of the camera.

Anna Mancuso looks very troubled over who to choose. I say go for Bella.

Finally, we had a surprise visit from Twentieth Century Fox, who happened to be staying nearby while filming the upcoming film UNSTOPPABLE with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. The young man above is assistant to the director, Tony Scott. He has promised to pass on to Summit that they have some serious fans in West Virginia. Also in the picture, the coordinator who gave me countless hours in planning time and oversaw a flawlessly run evening - Miss Jessica Loughman. Thanks, babe.

I also want to give a shoutout to:

Oglebay Park and Chef Jason Stevenson. Unbelievable food and service. One of the guests commented, "I felt like I was part of an elite group whisked in as a VIP client." The salad was so good we would have been thrilled just eating it, but Jason obliged us with our custom menu and prepared "New Moon Harvest Bake" for our entree. It included fried polenta and mixed grains, black beans in coconut milk, kale, sweet potato, plantains, a chili sauce, and toasted pumpkin seeds. Amazing!

I also want to thank SIBS, which is located outside of the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville. Debbie Lund, one of the SIBlings who owns the antique mall/flea market, loaned us an eclectic mix of furniture and knickknacks that really gave character to the presentation. If you like to decorate with new and used, you can find anything from a toothbrush to a school bus. I would opt for a new toothbrush though.

I also want to thank Lendable Linens in Pittsburgh for table linens.

I want to thank P.D. at Towngate Theater for transforming the space with lighting. Lighting people, lighting!!! I tell my clients this all the time. As a photographer, I'm hyper-aware of its importance. As a thanks to P.D., I want to remind everyone that the next play at Towngate will be Winnie the Pooh. It begins December 9th and runs through the 13th!

Anniversary III + New Baby

I had the privilege of photographing Russ and Kara's wedding three years ago, and since then, I've had the honor of visiting them twice more. Two years ago, I met baby Ella (below on the right). For those who received a copy of my mini-magazine earlier this year, you'll remember seeing a photograph of Sarah at three months in Kara's arms. She's grown since then!

Last week, coincidentally on Russ and Kara's third anniversary, I had the honor of meeting their newest family member, Sarah (below on the left). What a beautiful bunch they are.

Take My Hand and We'll Make It, I Swear

It's getting harder to post just a few images from the day on the blog now that David Smith is accompanying me on most weddings. So, here's a slideshow of highlights from Beth and Christian's wedding in Philadelphia two weeks ago.

Beth and Christian live in NYC but opted for a destination wedding in Philadelphia, as Beth grew up in Reading. In looking for venues, Beth and Christian fell in love with Glen Foerd Mansion on the Delaware River. Their ceremony took place at sunset along the river, cocktails and dinner followed inside the mansion, and the reception took place adjacently in a glass conservatory.

Both got ready at the Westin, though Christian took a detour and began "getting ready" at a local bar. Although there were many great images, in order not to ruin anyone's political aspirations, only one has been posted in this slideshow.

If you saw the posting of their engagement photos, you will know that Christian orchestrated an amazing proposal. To recap, after proposing to Beth in Central Park, they returned to their apartment, where "City of Blinding Lights" was playing and Beth's friends and family awaited. Shortly afterwards, he whisked her off to Paris for a long weekend.

So, on the wedding day, the band ended the reception with "City of Blinding Lights", but not before Christian could pull out another surprise. He joined the band onstage, removed his wedding wear, revealing a t-shirt with puff paint that read, "Mrs. White Rocks", and serenaded Beth and the crowd with Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer". You will also see images of another additional surprise, this one from Beth's brother. He brought a Mummers band to the reception, The Mummers being a true Philadelphia tradition.

Beth and Christian are honeymooning in French Polynesia. They'll return to live in NY where Christian is an attorney and Beth works in finance. Making a heartfelt prayer for the two of you in the city of blinding lights!
